Preparation

First things first, before we start please be sure you are currently on the 05.11.07 baseband. If you are not, connect to iTunes and update your software to 3.1.2. Once that is done it is time to begin. You will need to go to the BlackRa1n homepage, and click on the Apple to download the proper software. You will want to save the zip file to your desktop and then double-click on it. This will then create the BlackRa1n launch icon.

The Jailbreak Process

Connect your iPhone to your computer. Once connected double-click the BlackRa1n icon to begin the process.

Now simply click “make it rain”. Your device will now enter recovery mode.

Your device will now reboot.

Once your device reboots the jailbreak process is complete and you will see the following message on your desktop.

Installing Cydia/Rock/Unlock

On your Springboard you will now see the BlackRa1n icon. Make sure you have a data connection and then press the icon to proceed.

* If you plan to unlock your device for T-Mobile USA (or any carrier not supporting iPhone 3G bands) you must first disable 3G in your settings before proceeding. *

Here you will now choose your installer. Your choices are Cydia and Rock. You can also select “sn0w” if you are unlocking your device. After you make your selections press “install”.

* Do not select “sn0w” if you are not unlocking your iPhone. *

Once complete your Springboard will reset and you will now see Cydia or Rock, whichever you chose, on your screen.

Congratulations, you have successfully jailbroke/unlocked your iPhone. If you wish, you can uninstall BlackRa1n from your iPhone by simply going back into the application and pressing “uninstall”.

iPhone 3G finally unlocked, to debut at New Years

The iPhone dev team announced yesterday that they had finally achieved an iPhone 3G unlock. Until now, you could jailbreak 3G iPhones but not unlock them for use with alternative carriers. This new unlock allows the 3G to join the first-generation iPhone in providing service outside of those carriers that Apple has locked to the units.

In order to take advantage of this unlock, you'll need to make sure that you did not upgrade your iPhone's baseband past 2.11.07. The team warned about this baseband issue as firmware 2.2 was about to debut. At this time, you can upgrade to 2.2 by using QuickPwn or Pwnage to disable the baseband component.

If you're looking to unlock, however, prepare to wait a few weeks. The new unlock will be released around New Year's Eve, said the team. When released, the unlock, which is codenamed yellowsn0w, will let you use third-party GSM SIMs in your iPhone and both send and receive calls. In the US, AT&T and T-Mobile are the only two major carriers who use this technology. Because of technology differences, if you use a T-Mobile data plan with your unlocked 3G iPhone, you'll be able to use EDGE data but not 3G data (AT&T uses different HSPA/WCDMA frequencies).

Significant iPhone 3G unlock progress, no unlock yet

The iPhone Dev Team has announced “significant 3G progress” towards a 3G unlock, modifying iPhone 3G baseband and even running modified baseband code, but the unlock itself remains elusive.

The quest to unlock the iPhone 3G continues with the latest iPhone Dev Team announcement, and while no 3G unlock is yet possible, the Dev Team has made progress.

In a blog posting called “3G Update”, the Dev Team said: “We made some significant 3G progress this week.

On display is text on a screen, part of which says “PWNED PROFILE” above another called “STORED PROFILE”.

The Dev Team says it shows “a 3G iPhone whose baseband has been modified. And even though it’s modified — and fails the integrity check — it’s still running.”

They also ask: “Can you guess where the patch was made?”, although the answer to this isn’t clear.

The team continues: “Running modified baseband code is a very useful ability, but it’s still not possible to accurately estimate how close we are to the ultimate goal,” while a short video of the screen described above can be seen here, at the “homepage.mac.com” address of iPhone Dev Team member and blog forum moderator “MuscleNerd”.

So, while there is no non-Apple software 3G unlock yet, this is the first real sign of progress since the iPhone 3G was released and then jailbroken after a few days, although 2G iPhones have enjoy quick jailbreaks and unlocks soon after each new firmware version is released by Apple.

It’s worth remembering that the iPhone Dev Team is working on the 01.45.00 iPhone 3G baseband firmware, with newer basebands yet to be tackled.

iPhone Keeps Locking Up

I just recently updated my iPhone to version 1.1.1. Whenever I press sleep/wake the slide to unlock appears and the phone locks up for approximatley 5-7 seconds, then I am able to slide to unlock. It randomly locks up for 5-7 seconds during normal usage and locks up EVERY time someone calls me, leaving me anxiously awaiting it to unfreeze so I can answer a maybe important phone call.. This is very annoying. Any one have the same problems?? I am curious if it is because of my use of 3rd party apps before I updated. I tried to restore, didn't help... Maybe version 1.1.1 is buggy? If you have any other ideas/comments on what this could be or how to fix this I would greatly appreciate it!!!!

Rumor: Unlocked 3G iPhone In Italy by Summer?

According to the Italian website Repubblica.it, Italy is due to get a 3G version of the iPhone in time for summer. The publication believes that the new model will be based upon 3G UMTS technologies, skipping the current 2G rev of the iPhone entirely.

Telecom Italia Mobile is said to be Apple's initial distributor of the handset, although the phone is said to not be locked to any one carrier. No revenue sharing will take place with any of the carriers in Italy and will likely result in a more expensive phone.

Although the phone will not be locked to any one carrier, it is believed that Telecom Italia Mobile will be at an advantage compared to GSM competitors in the area.
